Opening Reception for Stories in Small Spaces

Stories-ellencherry (1).jpg

Saturday October 19th, 6-8pm. Featuring the work of Bonnie Schupp and ellen cherry.

Don’t miss the opening reception!

Through art and stories, we seek to make sense of the world. We find connection to others by revealing universal themes and common ground. We also build a bridge to understanding ourselves and our place in the world by revealing subtle layers. Lyrics and music invite us to examine emotional connections. Stories in Small Spaces filters out the noise that bombards us and asks us to pay attention to a single moment. No image in this exhibit features a human form and this absence is intentional--viewers can become participants through their own imagination.

Opening Reception for Eruptions Of The Digital Into The Physical

Join us for the opening reception for the exhibition, Eruptions Of The Digital Into The Physical, happening during a special Prints and Multiples Fair edition of the monthly Alloverstreet Art walk! More info below.

Eruptions Of The Digital Into The Physical

This exhibition has been developed alongside a larger exhibition entitled Just Press Print which has been curated by UWE Lecturer / Researcher Dr. Paul Laidler. The Just Press Print exhibition presents a number of artists and designers that have worked collaboratively with Paul Laidler through his print publishing work athttp://www.cfpreditions.co.uk/. The print publishing and exhibition work both comment upon the influence of digital technology within the discipline of printmaking and the field of graphic arts. Just Press Print was exhibited at MICA from December 2015 to March 2016 and will continue to travel in the USA between 2016 – 2017.

To create this exhibit, students from both the University of the West England, Bristol UK and Maryland Institute College of Art were asked to explore the development of today’s technologically informed scene as a maker of physical artworks, and respond to one of the following quotes / ruminations (that are central to all the artists works in the Just Press Print exhibition) by the American author and futurist Bruce Sterling -  ‘Looking through the eyes of machines as humans’ and ‘Eruptions of the digital into the physical’. The goal of this endeavor is simple, to create work that engages the public with the possibilities of print in the digital age.

Participating artists include: Kaitlin Beebe, Amelia Bombace, Evan Christopherson, Kaitlyn Conte , M. McCallum Dickens, Jackson Farley, Alexandra Harmel, Alexandria Henry, Dasom Kim, Ema Koch, Dan Langston, Aida Ramirez, Amber Rhein, Isabel Rosen-Hamilton, Madison Scillian, Morgan Strahorn, Jamie Burns, Ruth Irvine, Evangelina Papadopoulos, Eleanor Elliot-Rathbone, Matilda Scott, Olivia Beckett, Tom Handy, Jono Kamester, Steve McCarthy, Willem Purdy, Stuart Cannell, Nick Greenglass, Judy Lau, Jono Sandilands and Stephanie Turnbull

Reception for Cutz: Black Men In Focus.

Join us in celebration of:

Cutz: Black Men in Focus by Gracie Xavier
On View: October 2-30, 2015
Reception: October 9, 2015 6-9pm

"Cutz: Black Men in Focus" is a photography and video exhibit by Gracie Xavier that investigates current events, social myths and personal perceptions surrounding the Black male identity through the backdrop of the African American barber shop.

“As a Social Worker and Community Artist, I was deeply moved and inspired to create an intrinsic solution to address the social justice issues facing men of color,” says artist Gracie Xavier. Often the only stories highlighted of black men are centered around violence, incarceration, and death. Because stories depicting positive images of African American men are not readily available or highlighted in the media, Xavier worked in collaboration with local barbershops, community groups and schools to amplify the voices of African American men in the narration of their own stories and celebration of their lives.

This community art project is produced by Gracie Xavier and curated by Michelle Ivette Gomez.

Rituals and The Docile Body: Closing Reception and Potluck

One last opportunity to see "Rituals and the Docile Body", the work of Dafna Rehavia. Join us and get an intimate look at the work and have an in-depth discussion with the artist. Feel free to bring a dish. No alcohol please.

About the Artist:

Dafna Rehavia is an Israeli born feminist, activist artist. She explores the docile body as the site of specific behaviors that she defines as rituals. Her works symbolize the ways authoritative discourses trap our bodies. Rituals and the Docile Body sheds light on the bodily practice and performance of “natural,” accepted, cultural, religious and political acts and habits. The exhibit has three bodies of work that deal with religious and political rituals “Menstrual Wedding Dress’”; “ConStricted”; and “Present-Absent: De-Constructed”. A dance ritual performance and participatory workshop will take place during the opening night, inviting audience members to join the artist in turning menstrual pads into ‘flowers’.

Rehavia received her B.F.A & BED from Beit-Berl, Hamidrasha Israel, M.A. CAT at Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA, and her Ph.D at the University of Derby, UK. Rehavia’s work has been exhibited internationally, in Tel Aviv, Amsterdam, New York City, Pittsburgh, Boston, Chicago and more.

LabBodies presents: Borders, Boundaries, and Barricades

Dates: June 22nd - July 4th

Locations: Gallery CA, La Bodega Gallery, and LabBodies (Copycat B401)

Borders, Boundaries, and Barricades, is a two week long performance art review highlighting the performance art community in Baltimore. The festival will feature works from emerging to mid-career artists based in Baltimore

Including:

Waqia Abdul-Kareem, Eames Armstrong, BFLY, Esther Baker-Tarpaga,  Erick Benitez, Jacob Budenz, Alanna Clarke,  Bobby English, Hoesy Corona, Shola Cole, Alexander D’Agostino, Laure Drougal, Isa Leal, Leila Khoury, Kristin Nicole McWharter, Emilia Pennanen, Ada Pinkston, Paul Short, Marcel Mandeng, Sophia Mak, Noelle Tolbert, Lucia Treasure

Programing will include scheduled performances, interactive installations, artist talks, and a panel discussion.

About Borders, Boundaries, and Barricades

The three week long festival will examine the concept of borders, visible/invisible lines that separate two or more political or geographic areas. A border is an edge, a limitation, a boundary. They may be real/imagined; internal/external; self/other; life/ death; of the city/state. Borders  both bring us together as well as define our wounds.

Despite the complexity of the bonds and wounds that borders create, we often find ourselves working with or against them in our everyday interactions as they strictly monitor and circumscribe our human movements

About LabBodies

LabBodies is a performance art laboratory based in Baltimore Maryland that provides a format for artists working in the arena of performance art to exhibit their work, with the primary values of collaboration, experimentation, and interaction. The Vision of LabBodies is to establish Baltimore as a location where regional, national and international performance artists live and work through: ongoing series of performance art events, performance artist residencies and a new series of performance art festivals. To date, LabBodies has showcased over 50 local, regional, national and international performance artists. The Laboratory was founded in 2014 and is under the direction of Dr. H. Corona and Dr. A. Sight Unseen Baltimore presents Entanglements

Entanglements (2009-2014)
Sandra Gibson + Luis Recoder

Multiple 16mm projection performance; black & white, mixed media; optical soundtrack
processed live by special guest local artist, Max Eilbacher, approx. 60 minutes

http://sightunseenbaltimore.com/

Entanglements is a projection performance conceived as an open invitation for sound artists to process the optical soundtracks from an array of handcrafted 16mm film loops. The artist is completely free to interpret the soundtracks in any way they see fit. Entanglements was originally commissioned by Light Industry for the Performa 09 Biennial in New York, featuring sound artist Ben Owen. Since then the artists have performed the work with Adam Sonderberg for the San Francisco Cinematheque’s Crossroads festival in 2010 and Claudio Rocchetti for Atelier Impopulaire’s Split: A Visual Restitution exhibition during the May Invitational at DOCVA in Milan, Italy 2014.

Sandra Gibson and Luis Recoder stage the scene of film as orphaned object through the temporal labor of moving image installation. Collaborators since 2000, Gibson and Recoder unite the rich traditions of the experimental film, particularly its structuralist and materialist strands, and the multi-modal sensibility of expanded cinema that emerged in the 1960s, in which the moving image was woven into the labile space of performance, sound and audience interaction. Their larger body of work explores this interstice between avant-garde film practice and the incorporation of moving images and time-based media into the museum and art gallery. Gibson and Recoder have exhibited internationally at numerous museums, galleries, and film festivals such as the Whitney Museum of American Art (NY, NY); Madison Square Park Conservancy (NY, NY), Performa (NY, NY); Redcat (Los Angeles, CA); Ballroom Marfa (Marfa, TX); Sundance Film Festival (Park City, UT); Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis (St. Louis, MO); Toronto International Film Festival (Toronto, Canada); Tate Modern (London, UK); Institute of Contemporary Arts (London, UK); Viennale (Vienna, Austria), Internationale Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen (Oberhausen, Germany), HMKV (Dortmund, Germany);MuHKA (Antwerp, Belgium); International Film Festival Rotterdam (Rotterdam, The Netherlands); Serralves Foundation (Porto, Portugal); and the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art (Kanazawa, Japan). Gibson and Recoder live and work in New York.

Max Eilbacher is a local video and sound artist from Baltimore, Maryland.
